University of Ghana Students Plan Friday March Over Accommodation Costs

Kadek Putra·October 27, 2026·3 min read

Students at the University of Ghana will hold a march and rally on Friday, October 30, 2026, to oppose rising accommodation charges and what organisers describe as the commercialisation of student housing, Adomonline.com reports.

The demonstration, tagged "End Student Exploitation Now!", is being arranged by the #SaveTheUniversity Movement, Students for Accommodation and Concerned Students of Ghana.

According to Adomonline.com, the groups said in a press statement that continuing students are being asked to pay at least GH¢5,000 for accommodation, with charges at some facilities climbing to GH¢8,000.

Why it matters

The protest puts a spotlight on the cost of living at one of Ghana's most prominent public universities and on the question of who bears the expense of student housing. The organisers argue that the price of securing a room at a public institution should not stand between a student and an education, and they have framed the dispute as a test of whether the university treats students as learners or as customers.

The outcome could also shape how other public universities in Ghana handle accommodation pricing, particularly where commercial entities manage residential facilities on their behalf.

Organisers question UGEL-managed halls and placement policy

In their statement, the groups accused the university of prioritising income over student welfare. They raised particular concern about the conversion of traditional halls into facilities run by the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited (UGEL), which they claim charge students higher rates, according to Adomonline.com.

The organisers also criticised the university's "In-Out-Out-Out" accommodation policy, saying it leaves continuing students struggling to find a place to live on campus.

They added that students who do secure accommodation still face inadequate water supply, overcrowding and poor sanitation in some halls.

The statement further objected to extended-stay fees levied on graduate students who need more time on campus to finish their research and other academic work.

Questions over promised hostel project and new universities

The groups also asked for an update on a proposed 10,000-bed prefabricated hostel project for the university. According to Adomonline.com, they said the President announced the plan in January 2026, with equipment expected from Singapore, and that students are still waiting for clarity on its status more than nine months later.

They likewise called for details on how accommodation will be arranged for the 12 new universities announced by the Minister of Education.

The demands

At the centre of the protest is a call for an immediate freeze and reversal of all fee increases, especially those covering residential accommodation.

The organisers also want extended-stay charges for graduate students scrapped and a full public breakdown of university fees, including which bodies approve them.

They are asking the university to draw up and fund a plan to upgrade residential facilities, study spaces and general working conditions on campus.

In addition, the groups urged all Junior Common Rooms (JCRs) to hold open forums where hostel residents can discuss the fee increases and agree on a collective position.

Setting out their stance, the organisers said accommodation should not be treated as a luxury, education should not be run as a business, and students should not be seen as sources of revenue.

March route and timing

The demonstration is due to start at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 30, at the Okponglo Gate taxi station. Participants will march towards the Legon Main Gate, where the rally will be held.

The organisers have invited media houses to cover the event and said they are available for interviews both before the protest and on the day.

What to watch: whether the university responds to the demands or comments on the status of the hostel project before Friday's march.
